Atelier Sacelean Association
The Atelier Sacelean Association runs educational projects for underprivileged children in Sacele. This includes running programmes at its educational centre all year round and holding a summer camp. Children who attend the programmes come from families living in poverty. Programmes are also run at a local school, attended by children from very disadvantaged backgrounds.
The Founder of the Association, Cristina Birsan, has encouraged people both from Romania and abroad to get involved through volunteering with the programmes. The programmes are now run by Oana Cristea, who started as a local volunteer at the Association.
Until the Sacele Hospital was shut down, the Association also ran a care programme for the children and babies admitted there. Our past projects have included giving contributions to support the programme at the hospital, arranging clothes collections, where the clothes were distributed to children in the hospital and to other underprivileged children in Sacele, funding the repair of computers at the educational centre, helping to fund a summer art project at the centre and funded the education centre’s running costs for eighteen months. A huge thank you to everyone who contributed and made this all possible!
We would now like to contribute towards the Association’s Dental Hygiene Project. Oana noticed that the children who attend the Centre’s programmes, all have problems with their teeth. She gives out toothpaste and toothbrushes, whenever she has the resources, and has taught the children about brushing their teeth. They already have many dental problems though, and it costs £44 to fill one cavity. This cost is greater than the amount most of the families will spend on food in one week. There are thirty-two children and each child has at least one cavity. We hope to be able to contribute towards this project, to allow the children to go to the dentist and have their cavities filled.
