Ghana
New Life International Orphanage in Ghana, was the first organisation we started working with. We now also have links with Sankofa Mbofra Fie, which runs an orphanage and school in another village in Ghana. More about the individual organisations can be found below.
New Life International Orphanage
The orphanage is located in the village of Ansepatu, near Cape Coast. It is home to around forty children, but many more from nearby villages attend school there.
We work with the orphanage in two ways. We fundraise for specific projects and we also set up sponsorships for individual children.
Some of our projects at the orphanage have included the purchase and installation of a water storage tank, for clean drinking water, and the building of a playground. More can be read about these projects and others on our past projects page. We have recently fundraised enough to complete the building of a new classroom at the orphanage school. We would like to thank all individual donors who gave to this, the Marr-Munning Trust for their grant, and our Patron, Steve Parkinson who held a fundraiser for this.
Current Appeals from the orphanage:
The orphanage needs funding for the following things. If you can help by fundraising or by donating, it would be so great for the children.
Chairs and desks: CHW funded the building of a new classroom. Now, chairs and desks are needed to go inside it.
Vocational training centre: Teenagers at the orphanage and from the surrounding village will be able to learn skills, like sewing, or carpentry, so that they will be able to provide for themselves when they are adults. It will cost just under five thousand pounds to build the centre and will make a huge difference to the lives and futures of these children.
The class is made up of children who live at the orphanage and children living in nearby villages.
Sponsoring a child:
Sponsorship makes a lasting difference in the lives of these children. You could help to make that difference. Just fifteen pounds can feed a child for a month. If you want to give more, this will be spent on clothes or school materials for the child. You will receive information about the child, and a letter from him or her. It would be really great if all the children at this orphanage could be sponsored!
Sankofa Mbofra Fie
Sankofa Mbofra Fie runs an orphanage and school, in the village of Eguafo, near Elmina. Many children from the village attend this school. Sankofa was set up in 2006 and much progress has been made since then.
Sankofa's school is now suffering from a large problem. Bamboo classrooms were built and although hardly ideal, it meant that at least the children in Eguafo could gain an education. However, authorities want to shut the school down if a proper building is not built. CHW wants to help raise funds for a proper school building to be constructed. Sankofa also needs help in paying the teachers' salaries, and we would like to raise money for this too, as it is vital that these children gain an education.
Sankofa also runs an orphanage. The director, David, hopes that some people might like to start making regular donations towards buying the children's food. Please get in touch if you think you can help!
Shallee McArthur, from the US, volunteered in Ghana, and returned again one summer, to coordinate a volunteer group at Sankofa. She is trying to raise funding for Sankofa. Click here to download her appeal letter (it is in pdf format). Shallee has volunteered at both Sankofa and New Life. You can see more info about this on her blog, Prayers from Africa, by clicking here.
How can YOU help these children get the education they deserve?
Give some of your time. You could take the time either to do some fundraising of your own to help these children, or you could pass the message of this appeal on, so more and more people can get involved.
Make a donation. Visit our "donate" page to see how you could contribute.
